Spanish retailers have reduced food waste from 1.78% in 2014 to 0.47% in 2024 of the total sold, meaning that 98.91% of the food sold was sold last year, according to data from the Association of Manufacturers and Distributors (Aecoc).
Aecoc's Director of Communications and Institutional Relations, Nuria de Pedraza, emphasized that thanks to their sustained efforts over the years, participating large-scale retailers have managed to reduce their waste rate from 1.78% to 0.47% of their total sales.
The 'Food Waste Barometer', developed by Aecoc and Phenix, also shows that seven out of ten consumers support discounts on products close to their expiration date, while 59% value vacuum-packing pre-cut products, and 48% value organizing shelves according to family size.
Similarly, in the hospitality industry, 67% of respondents appreciate being able to take leftover food home, 61% support last-minute menus at reduced prices, and 44% value the option of choosing menus tailored to the desired quantity.
