Salvadoran Kilmar Ábrego García, in the custody of U.S. authorities, requested this Tuesday that his criminal case be dismissed and his release, denouncing a "vindictive" prosecution by the Department of Justice.
His defense team has asked a Nashville judge to dismiss his alleged human trafficking case, arguing that Ábrego has been subjected to "vindictive and selective prosecution" by the Trump administration, which deported him to a mega-prison in El Salvador due to an "administrative error."
"This case is the result of the government's concerted effort to punish him for having the audacity to defend himself, rather than accept a brutal injustice," Ábrego's lawyers stated in a document reported by Bloomberg, in which they denounced numerous irregularities in the proceedings, after authorities were forced to repatriate the Salvadoran despite his initial opposition.
His lawyers have also asked a Tennessee court in a separate filing to allow him to return to his home state of Maryland, nearly a month after it was ruled that Ábrego does not need to remain in custody while facing federal charges.
