Río Negro Police Chief in the spotlight after political meeting and criticism from the National Party

by August 27, 2025

The position of Río Negro Police Chief Sergio Solé is facing political tension. Last week, he participated in a meeting with the departmental Broad Front's Political Committee, which sparked strong opposition within the National Party. Two deputies and the party's president, Álvaro Delgado, demanded that Interior Minister Carlos Negro immediately resign.

The situation has worsened in recent hours following new statements by Solé that, according to nationalist leaders, constitute an insult. The National Party is now analyzing its next steps and is even considering withdrawing from the security talks convened by the government .

Initial support from the Interior

Initially, the Interior Ministry disagreed with the nationalists' legal interpretation. The official argument was that Solé's presence at a party meeting did not constitute a violation of the Constitution or the Organic Police Law. The official has been a retired police officer for eight years, and according to the Urgent Consideration Law (LUC), after two years of dismissal, officials are freed from legal restrictions on political participation.

A meeting was scheduled for this Wednesday in Montevideo between Minister Negro and Solé, where the agreement was expected to be formalized. However, the morning began with radio statements from the police chief that hardened the opposition's stance and forced the Interior Ministry to review its position.

Statements that sparked controversy

In a message sent to the program "Encarando la mañana" on Radio Impacto in Fray Bentos, Solé questioned the "ethical standard" by which the National Party measured its actions. He recalled episodes such as the 2024 interpellation in the Marset case, the entry of high-ranking officials through the Executive Tower garage, and the controversial destruction of a document on the 11th floor. He also alluded to alleged irregularities in Artigas and Salto Grande.

For Representative Pablo Abdala, former Undersecretary of the Interior, these statements were "extremely serious." Senator Javier García and Delgado himself also expressed that it is "incompatible" to hold a national dialogue on security while a police chief questions and insults a political party .

Political consequences under analysis

If Solé does not resign, the National Party the possibility of withdrawing from the security dialogue next

Sources from the Ministry of the Interior indicated that the situation is being handled with secrecy "to protect people and institutions." Meanwhile, Solé's tenure in office has been called into question, and the outcome will depend on upcoming political decisions .
