A controversy erupted in the department after the chief of police of Río Negro , Sergio Solé, attended a meeting of the Political Board of the Broad Front.

Reaction of the National Party

The National Party's Departmental Commission issued a statement expressing its "deep concern" over the presence of ministerial officials, including the police chief, at party events. The document, obtained by Uruguay al Día, cited Article 77 of the Constitution, which requires police officers to refrain from political activities, under penalty of dismissal.

Furthermore, it was recalled that the Organic Police Law and various regulatory decrees reinforce this prohibition. Therefore, the National Police announced that it will take the issue to the appropriate authorities for evaluation.

Demand for removal

Pablo Abdala, former deputy minister of the Interior and current president of the House Security Committee, described what happened as an "aggravation to democracy." Through the social media platform X, he stated that the National Party is demanding that Interior Minister Carlos Negro immediately remove Solé. Otherwise, he announced that he will summon the leader to Parliament, along with Congresswoman Mercedes Long.

For now, the situation of the Río Negro police chief remains under review, and the incident has added tension to the department's political landscape.
