Karen Gillan Highlander : Balancing Swords, Amazon MGM's remake of the cult '80s classic.
Henry Cavill leads the cast that includes Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista and Marisa Abela.
The action-packed film, which hails from Amazon MGM's United Artists lineup, is being directed by Chad Stahelski and is slated for a theatrical release. Principal photography is expected to begin in late September.
The original Highlander , released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a medieval Scottish nobleman who discovers he's an immortal warrior. Aided by a swordsman named Ramirez, played by Sean Connery, the titular Highlander battles other immortals throughout the centuries, culminating in a modern-day battle where, as the classic line of dialogue goes, "there can be only one."
In the remake, Cavill plays MacLeod while Crowe is Ramirez. Bautista is the savage warrior named Kurgen, while Industry actress Marisa Abela also has a leading role.
Gillan will play Heather, MacLeod's mortal wife and the love of his life.
Michael Finch wrote the script for the remake. Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt are producing through United Artists alongside Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski's 87Even Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.
If successful, Gillan could have a third franchise on her resume. The actress is best known for playing the cyber alien Nebula in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers series. She also starred in Sony's Jumanji: The Jungle Book and Jumanji: The Next Level , with a third on the way.
The Life of Chuck in neon . Based on the soap opera by Stephen King, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was honored with the People's Choice Award.
Gillan is represented by Uta, Maison Two, Linden Entertainment and Jackoway Austen.
