Dark skies and weather alert for intense storms in northern Uruguay

Northern Uruguay is on alert for storms, hail, and strong winds this Saturday.

The Uruguayan Meteorological Institute (Inumet) issued an orange-level weather warning for severe storms affecting several towns in the north of the country. The alert went into effect at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, July 26, and will be updated again at 4:00 p.m.

According to the official report, an atmospheric disturbance is expected that, when interacting with a warm, humid, and unstable air mass, could generate intense, short-lived storms.

Associated phenomena include the possibility of heavy rainfall in short periods, intense electrical activity, occasional hail, and strong wind gusts. Inumet clarified that there may be temporary improvements in some areas during the duration of the warning, but that the situation will continue to be closely monitored.

The main towns affected by this alert include areas in the department of Artigas, such as Baltasar Brum, Bella Unión, Mones Quintela, and Tomás Gomensoro, among others. In Salto, the warning applies to areas such as Termas del Arapey, Belén, and Arapey.

Residents in these parts of the country are staying alert for new updates, while authorities recommend caution in the face of potential complications such as power outages, flooded streets, or fallen trees.
