The UN has reaffirmed its condemnation of Israel's settlement expansion in occupied areas of the West Bank, a practice that is "illegal" under international law. Secretary-General António Guterres' office has urged its halt and reversal to facilitate a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians.
"We condemn the decision taken today," said Guterres' spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, referring to a controversial project that plans to build 3,400 homes and, de facto, divides the West Bank in two, as celebrated by ultranationalist members of Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
Dujarric urged the Israeli government to respect its international "obligations," a message that, as he himself acknowledged, has been conveyed to him on other occasions, without success. However, he insisted that, for the UN, "there is no alternative" to the two-state solution.
The British government has also joined the criticism, with its Foreign Minister, David Lammy, decrying a plan that "would divide the Palestinian state in two." "This is a flagrant violation of international law," he denounced in a message on the social network X, in which he also called on Netanyahu to reverse his course.
