The Islamist movement Hamas has claimed that Israel's new military plans for the Gaza Strip show that Benjamin Netanyahu's government is "the real obstacle" to reaching a ceasefire, although it has warned that the new offensive "will fail, just as the previous ones did."
Hamas has condemned in a statement what it considers "a brutal war against innocent civilians," after Israeli authorities released new details of the escalation of the offensive against the Gaza Strip, which includes the final capture of the Gaza capital, Al Jazeera reports.
"The occupation of Gaza will not be a walk in the park," the group warned, calling on the international community to exert "maximum pressure" on Israel to end its current policy. In this regard, it warned that both Israel and the United States will be "fully responsible" for what happens in a "criminal operation" aimed at "destroying what remains of life in Gaza."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Wednesday to "shorten" the deadlines "to take control of the last terrorist strongholds and ensure the defeat of Hamas" in the Gaza Strip, the scene of an offensive that began in October 2023.
The Netanyahu government approved the intensification of operations on August 8 and has recently finalized the specific plans, which include the call-up of tens of thousands of reservists. It also anticipates the massive displacement of Gaza City residents.
