The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed the death of at least 35 jihadists in a counterterrorism operation by the Nigerian military near the border with Cameroon, in the northeastern state of Borno.
According to military reports reported by the Nigerian television network TVC News, the terrorists were planning an attack against Nigerian troops. Intelligence services had identified four separate assembly points that were targeted.
"Following the operation , communication was reestablished with ground troops, who confirmed that the situation around their location had stabilized," said Nigerian Air Force spokesman Ehimen Ejodame.
This operation, carried out largely by air, underscores the Air Force's commitment to providing support to ground troops in the fight against terrorism in the country, the spokesperson said.
Authorities have not clarified whether the suspects were members of Boko Haram or its offshoot, the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), both of which are particularly active in the northeast of the country and the Lake Chad basin , where they have carried out dozens of attacks in recent months.
