MADRID, 17 (EUROPA PRESS)

At least 40 people are missing after a barge sank Sunday in Nigeria's northwestern state of Sokoto, emergency authorities confirmed.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated an immediate response mechanism after receiving reports that a boat carrying more than 50 passengers capsized while heading to the Goronyo market.

In its latest update on its Facebook page, NEMA confirms that only a dozen people have been rescued so far.

"NEMA, in collaboration with local authorities and emergency services, is intensifying search and rescue operations to locate missing persons," the organization concluded in its statement.
