Brawl in Paysandú: neighbors destroyed the home of a man accused of abuse.
In Paysandú, neighbors burned down the home of a man accused of abusing his stepdaughter. The accused was taken away by the police and had to appear before the Prosecutor's Office for contempt of court orders.
Neighborhood tensions escalated after the case of child abuse in Paysandú became known.
A tense night erupted in Paysandú after neighbors gathered in front of a house located at Grito de Asencio and Naciones Unidas. A man living there was accused of abusing his stepdaughter, a minor who is currently hospitalized.
It all began with shouts and insults directed at the accused and his partner, who is also the girl's mother. The anger grew minute by minute. First, they demanded they leave the neighborhood, then they spray-painted the house with graffiti, and finally they broke in.
Police had to intervene to remove the couple from the scene. Once they left, several neighbors entered the home, causing damage and burning the defendant's belongings. Firefighters were called in to contain the blaze.
The following day, the man appeared before the Prosecutor's Office for violating the precautionary measures already imposed on him. Outside the Public Ministry headquarters, another group of neighbors again demonstrated against him.
This fact once again highlights the social reaction to cases of child abuse and the tension generated by the feeling of impunity or lack of rapid response from the justice system.
