Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed this Thursday the arrest in the United States of former CEO of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Carlos Alberto Treviño, accused of bribery in the Odebrecht investigation.
"Yesterday, a former Pemex director was arrested, who was among the existing alerts. He will be deported and will be tried here in Mexico for corruption," he reported at a press conference, in which he explained that an extradition request was pending against Treviño five years ago.
The accusation against him stems from statements by his predecessor at the institution, Emilio Lozoya, who claimed that Treviño received nearly four million pesos in bribes in exchange for awarding a contract to the Odebrecht scheme to operate a polyethylene plant, according to the newspaper El Universal.
The Attorney General's Office (FGR) has asked Interpol to issue a "red alert" against Treviño, the former CEO of Pemex during the Enrique Peña Nieto administration, after he failed to appear for a hearing he was summoned to following charges of money laundering and criminal association.
Lozoya was arrested on February 12, 2020, in Malaga, but was extradited to Mexico five months later after being charged with criminal association, money laundering, and bribery in the Odebrecht case and the Agronitrogenados fertilizer company.
