Spanish sprinter Sebastián 'Chevi' Guzmán won his fifth gold medal at the Chengdu World Games in China on Friday in the 1,000m track race. This was the fifteenth and penultimate day of the race, in which María Varo took silver in the women's individual duathlon, increasing Spain's medal tally to 20.
The 29-year-old skater from Vigo finished second in Friday's event, but he moved up to first place due to the disqualification of Colombian Juan Jacobo Mantilla, who blocked him on the final lap to allow his compatriot Jhon Edwar Tascón to win.
Guzmán thus earned his fifth medal at the event, all gold, after also winning the sprint, 100-meter race—holding a world record—the 200-meter dual time trial, and the 500-meter race.
Speed skating thus becomes the main source of medals for the Spanish delegation in Chengdu. Of the seven golds Spain has so far won, six have come from speed, with five each for Guzmán and Patxi Peula; the other was won by Juan Daniel Molina and José Moreno in the pairs acrobatic gymnastics event.
Spain's other medal on Friday went to María Varo in the women's individual duathlon, where she took the silver medal, finishing just two seconds (1:25:31) behind Mexico's Anahí Álvarez (1:25:33), who took the crown in a dramatic final sprint. The bronze went to Belgium's Jeanne Dupont (1:25:58).
