The Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), through the Canary Islands Health Research Institute Foundation (FIISC), is participating in the project, financially supported by the Gran Canaria Island Council's Solidarity Department, called "Support for undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in Mozambique." This project seeks to strengthen the training of medical interns residing in Mozambique.

This initiative seeks to improve healthcare in the central region of Mozambique by increasing the doctor-patient ratio and strengthening the training of medical students, residents in medical specialties, and medical professionals, the regional government explained in a statement.

Furthermore, this project, led by Dr. Luis López, seeks to support medical schools in the region by strengthening training programs in medical specialties that guarantee the qualifications of future professors, ensuring self-sufficiency in medical education, and providing the country with the teaching resources necessary to train its own physicians, guaranteeing "quality and accessible" healthcare.

With this program, UniZambeze, Mozambique's public university, will be able to recruit teaching staff to teach the second cycle of medicine (fourth and sixth years) at the Faculty of Medicine, located in Tete, in the areas of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics-Gynecology, and Pediatrics.

The project is funded by the Gran Canaria Island Council, through a direct grant of €100,000 awarded to the FIISC (Spanish Institute of Clinical Research and Clinical Medicine), and in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands University Hospital Complex.

COLLABORATION

Aimed at UniZambeze medical students and resident physicians (MIRs), the project prioritizes students who have earned their medical degree under the ULPGC-UniZambeze partnership, as well as approximately 300 specialists and healthcare professionals from Mozambique.

Likewise, the Canary Islands Health Service collaborates to complete and implement the training of medical residents through six-month rotations in public hospitals in the Canary Islands, specifically at the Insular University Hospital Complex-Maternal and Child Hospital in Gran Canaria.

The project also includes training medical graduates through the teaching of Canarian specialists in specific fields not available at the UniZambezi Faculty of Medicine, vocational training courses for healthcare personnel on specific topics requested by local health authorities, and a University Expert course to enable students to enroll in doctoral school.
