At least six elderly people have died and five others have suffered serious injuries in a fire that broke out early Saturday morning at a nursing home in the Portuguese town of Mirandela, in northern Portugal.
The fire broke out around 5:00 a.m. local time, and initial investigations place its origin in a mattress in one of the rooms, according to an official at the Bom Samaritano center quoted by RTP television.
Among the victims were the three occupants of the room where the flames allegedly started, while the other three deceased suffered respiratory problems due to smoke inhalation. In total, about 90 elderly people lived in the residence.
