Orsi expressed that he would have preferred a runoff after the tie in San Bautista.

President Orsi addressed the draw that determined the mayoral election in San Bautista and regretted that a runoff election was not held to resolve the tie.

President Yamandú Orsi addressed the unusual electoral outcome in the municipality of San Bautista on Wednesday, where a tie between two candidates led to the decision being decided by lottery.

The Electoral Court conducted the procedure around 2:00 p.m. at the Canelones Departmental Electoral Office. There, members of the Electoral Board placed the lists of the two candidates tied in the elections held on Sunday, May 11, in a ballot box. A member of the court randomly drew an envelope, and upon opening it, it was confirmed that the winner was Joaquín Farina , of the Colorado Party, who is part of Walter Cervini's faction.

The other candidate, Roberto Siriani , a member of the National Party, was eliminated from the competition by pure luck.

When asked by the press, Orsi didn't hide his displeasure. "Horrible, I didn't like it," he said bluntly. He added: "Not that it would be by lottery. I wanted a runoff there, but I arrived late."

The president acknowledged that the issue falls outside his jurisdiction as president, as it falls exclusively within the jurisdiction of the Electoral Court. However, he made it clear that he would have liked a different solution: "I wish something else had happened, but oh well," he concluded.

The drawing of lots, although provided for by law in cases of exact ties, generated a stir on social media and in the local political arena. Within the Canary Islands department, the news quickly spread among residents and activists who had been closely following the vote.

The winner, Joaquín Farina, will take over as the new mayor of San Bautista, a town with a history, its own identity, and an active community. Meanwhile, the election ended with controversy, not because of fraud or irregularities, but because of the unusual mechanism used to break the tie.

For Orsi, the episode represents a missed opportunity to bet on a second round that would further legitimize the outcome. But as he himself admitted, it was already out of time and out of his hands.
