New attorney general in Guatemala
The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, has appointed Gabriel García Luna as the country's new attorney general. This change occurs in a context of political and social tensions, marked by the controversy surrounding the management of the previous prosecutor, Consuelo Porras, who held the position since 2018 and was sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for corruption.
The new prosecutor will officially take office on May 17, and Arévalo made it clear that his mission will not be to serve particular political interests, but rather independent justice. This appointment occurs in a context where trust in institutions has been eroded by corruption scandals and the perception of impunity.
The election of García Luna was made from a list of six candidates, a process that was marked by controversy and various legal actions. The exclusion of some candidates generated a stir in the political environment, where the opposition has questioned the transparency of the process. Porras, the outgoing prosecutor, was not part of this list, reflecting a significant change in the direction of the prosecution.
Arévalo, who will assume the presidency in January 2024, has been critical of the management of Porras and other officials, accusing them of trying to destabilize his government after his electoral victory. In his speech, the president mentioned Porras, chief prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche and judge Fredy Orellana, who also face international sanctions, as part of an attempted coup against them.
Expectations about the new management
The appointment of García Luna has generated expectations in various sectors of Guatemalan society. Human rights organizations and civil society groups have expressed hope that the new prosecutor will advance a justice agenda that combats corruption and promotes transparency in institutions.
The new attorney general arrives in a position that has been criticized for its lack of independence and the perception that it has served political interests. The international community has been attentive to the changes in the prosecutor's office, considering that the fight against corruption is fundamental for the stability of the country.
García Luna, a lawyer with experience in the judicial field, will have to face the challenge of restoring confidence in the prosecutor's office and the justice system. His management will be closely watched, both by citizens and by international organizations, which have expressed their interest in the development of a more robust judicial system and less vulnerable to corruption.
The political context in Guatemala remains complex, with an opposition that has attempted to discredit the new government even before its inauguration. The situation is further complicated by the polarization that exists in society, where many citizens demand profound changes in the way institutions are managed.
Arévalo has made it clear that his administration will seek a change of course in Guatemalan politics, and the appointment of García Luna is a step in that direction. The expectation is that the new attorney general can carry out a management that prioritizes justice and the fight against corruption, in a country that has suffered the consequences of impunity for years.
The new attorney general, Gabriel García Luna, will officially take office on May 17.
