Girl run over in New Paris after motorcycle crash
A five-year-old girl is in critical condition after being run over in the New Paris neighborhood by a motorcycle that, according to witnesses, was competing in a clandestine dive. The event, which occurred on September 23, revived the debate on road safety in Montevideo and highlighted the lack of controls against a practice that, far from becoming extinct, seems to be spreading in different neighborhoods.
Traffic accident: girl run over in New Paris during a birthday
The tragedy occurred in the middle of a children's birthday. The girl, accompanied by other minors, was on the shoulder when she was hit by a motorcycle that was traveling at high speed. The parents, in a state of desperation, moved her from immediately to the Hospital del Cerro, where she was admitted with a serious condition and remains hospitalized in pediatric intensive care.
The celebration, which had brought together several families from the area, ended in a chaotic scene. Neighbors reported that the motorcyclists ran down the street as if it were a race track and that complaints about these reckless maneuvers had been reiterated in the last year.
Motorcycle driver and run over girl admitted to the Cerro Hospital
The young man who was driving the motorcycle was also injured. He lost control, fell into a ditch and, despite his injuries, tried to flee the scene. Finally, it was his own family who took him to the Hospital del Cerro. There he is hospitalized with fractures and multiple traumas, although he is out of danger.
The Flagrancia Prosecutor's Office took the case and is working on identifying the rest of the motorcyclists who participated in the crash. So far, no arrests have been recorded, but the security camera material and the testimonies of those present are being analyzed.
Illegal attacks in Montevideo and the case of the girl run over in Nuevo Paris
Illegal bites are not new to the residents of Nuevo París or nearby neighborhoods such as La Teja or Paso de la Arena. For years, races have been organized on residential streets or dimly lit avenues, generally through calls on social networks. For residents, the problem is recurring: complaints, sporadic operations and, later, the return of the motorcycles.
Specialists in road safety warn that these clandestine competitions not only put those who participate at risk, but also pedestrians, cyclists and entire families who move on public roads. “It is a cultural phenomenon that mixes recklessness, lack of controls and a feeling of impunity,” said an expert consulted by the local press.
Neighborhood complaints after the girl was run over in Nuevo Paris
The incident ignited outrage in the community. On social networks, neighbors demanded a greater police presence and permanent traffic controls. Several recalled similar episodes in recent years and maintained that specific operations are not enough to prevent new tragedies.
“Until something serious happens, no one does anything,” said a neighbor who participated in an improvised rally on the corner where the accident occurred. The testimony reflects a widespread feeling: the feeling that road insecurity has become natural in many neighborhoods of Montevideo.
Social consequences of the case of the girl run over in New Paris
The tragedy impacted not only the family of the girl, but also throughout New Paris. The community was shaken by an event that exposed the vulnerability of those who comply with the rules in the face of the irresponsibility of a few. The case reopens discussions about public policies: is it enough to toughen sanctions or is a comprehensive approach that combines controls, road safety education and recreational alternatives for young people necessary?
The Hospital del Cerro, once again, became the epicenter of an emergency caused by a traffic accident. There, doctors and officials work to save the little girl's life, while the judicial investigation tries to establish responsibilities.
