What FARM proposes at Expointer 2025 to influence COP30
The Federation of Rural Associations of Mercosur presented an agenda at Expointer focused on four priorities that, according to its representatives, explain the value of regional agricultural production. The axes include global food security, the sustainable development of rural territories, the contribution to climate action, and the preservation of ecosystems and their associated services. The explicit objective is to bring this perspective to COP30, to be held this year in Belém, to offer a productive interpretation of the role of the countryside.
The organization insists that agricultural activity not only supplies markets but also generates employment, innovation, and opportunities in rural areas; at the same time, it advocates for practices that protect soil, water, and biodiversity over the long term.
Food Security: the first priority raised by FARM
The document presented emphasizes that ensuring supply is a strategic responsibility in the face of geopolitical and climate tensions affecting global food chains. Producers assert their contribution to food availability and the need for policies that align production and access. They also raise the need for technical dialogue between governments and trade associations to protect vulnerable production chains and maintain functional stocks and logistics.
Rural Development: roots, employment and territorial innovation
The second pillar emphasizes the balanced development of rural areas as a condition for halting the exodus and sustaining local economies. The federation emphasizes that investments in infrastructure, access to credit, and technological training are key to generating quality employment in the interior. They promote models that integrate small and medium-sized producers into fairer and more resilient value chains.
Climate Action: Producers as part of the response
The third point emphasizes the sector's contribution to climate mitigation and adaptation through sustainable practices and technology. The proposal emphasizes the role of agroecology, crop rotation, soil carbon management, and renewable energy linked to agriculture. The organization calls for recognition in forums such as the COP of the agricultural sector's capacity to provide measurable solutions compatible with food security.
Ecosystem Services: conserving to produce
The fourth pillar addresses the preservation of landscapes, soils, and water resources as an essential foundation for future production. It calls for public policies to value ecosystem services and offer incentives for practices that protect biodiversity and the quality of natural resources. The federation calls for economic recognition mechanisms and technical tools to make conservation profitable and sustainable for producers.
