Explosive device in Salto, a time bomb under a forgotten bridge

The discovery of an explosive device in Salto mobilized the police and the army.

An explosive device was found in Salto this Friday afternoon in a vacant lot on Pascual Harriague Avenue, in the southern part of the city. The discovery led to a joint operation between the National Police and the National Army.

According to local police, the call came in around 3:45 p.m. Officers responded to a home located at 1100 block of the aforementioned avenue, where a 71-year-old man reported that his 24-year-old son had gone out to look for worms under a nearby bridge and, in the middle of the vacant lot, came across a mortar.

The young man took the object home around 2:00 p.m., unaware of its danger. Upon receiving the report, Army Infantry Battalion personnel arrived at the scene and removed the device for analysis and eventual deactivation.

Military sources indicated that the material was transferred to a specialized unit to determine whether it posed a risk of detonation. The investigation is seeking to establish the origin of the mortar and how it reached that point in the city.
