US President Donald Trump is considering naming Jerome Powell's successor as head of the Federal Reserve (Fed) from a list of eleven candidates, three of whom have not been previously announced, according to CNBC.

The American media outlet, citing government sources, has indicated that the White House is considering nominating Jefferies' chief market strategist, David Zervos; former Fed Board of Governors member Larry Lindsey; or BlackRock's global fixed-income investment director, Rick Rieder.

These three contenders would join the eight other candidates already known, including Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman; Fed Board Member Christopher Waller; and Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson.

Also in the running are Bush administration economic advisor Marc Summerlin; Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan; former St. Louis Fed President James Bullard; National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett; and former Fed Board member Kevin Warsh.

Sources have indicated that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will interview the candidates in a process they described as "deliberative" to narrow down the final list. Trump will then make the final decision.

For his part, Bessent himself confirmed this Wednesday that he has a list of ten or eleven people that includes "highly respected names in the private sector," as well as members of the Federal Reserve.

"I'm going to interview 10 or 11 people. Then, a group will meet with them. We want to talk about monetary policy and regulatory policy," he noted, adding that in recent years the central bank has overridden the other two regulators in the sector, the Office of Deposit Control (OCC) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). "They need to understand that they are one of the three," he stressed.

In any case, Bessent emphasized that Trump has "a very open mind" and recalled that before choosing Powell as Fed chairman, he met with such diverse profiles as Janet Yellen and John Taylor.
