US President Donald Trump said Friday that he will remove Lisa Cook from her position on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve (Fed), the governing body of the US central bank, if she does not resign.
"What she did was wrong, so I will fire her if she doesn't resign," the US president assured reporters on Friday.
Trump had already demanded Cook's resignation on Wednesday in response to reports accusing her of allegedly manipulating banking information to obtain two mortgages on favorable terms.
Cook was appointed to her current role by former President Joe Biden in January 2022, making her the first Black woman to serve on the Fed's governing body.
If Cook were to resign from his term, which expires in 2038, the Republican president would have a clear path to appoint another member to the Fed board who would be inclined to support his views on cutting money prices.
