Spain increased its exports to China by 13.7% in the first half of the year and increased its purchases from the Asian giant by 16.4%.

Spain's trade deficit with the United States stood at €7.0833 billion in the first six months of the year, 37% higher than the €5.1966 billion deficit recorded in the same period in 2024, according to data compiled in the Monthly Foreign Trade Report prepared by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business.

Between January and June, Spain exported €8.75 billion , a 5.1% decrease compared to the first six months of 2024.

These €8.7545 billion in exports to the United States represent 4.4% of Spain's total foreign sales in the first half of the year, which amounted to €197.151 billion.

Regarding imports, Spain purchased goods and services from the United States worth €15.838 billion in the first six months of the year, a figure 10.1% higher than the same period in 2024 and representing 7.1% of Spanish purchases abroad, which totaled €222.263 billion through June.

The trade deficit with the US rose by 93.6% in June.

Looking solely at June, Spain's trade deficit with the United States increased by 93.6% year-on-year, to €1.193 billion, compared to €616 million in June 2024.

Spanish exports to the United States reached €1.492 billion in June, representing 4.4% of total foreign sales and 6.4% lower than the figure for June last year.

Meanwhile, imports from the United States totaled €2.685 billion, equivalent to 7.2% of the total value of Spanish purchases abroad and 21.5% more than in June 2024.

The trade deficit with China rises by 17% until June

According to the report, China, with which Spain has sought to strengthen its trade relations following the Trump administration's tariff policy, was the country that contributed most positively to the year-on-year growth rate of Spanish imports in the first half of the year, including electrical appliances, medicines, and toys.

It was followed by the United States, from which Spain purchased mainly medicines, gas, and other foodstuffs in the first six months of the year.

For their part, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were among the countries that contributed most to the year-on-year variation in Spanish exports up to June.

As of June, Spain had a trade deficit with China of €20.2 billion, 17% higher than the same period in 2024. Spanish exports to the Asian giant increased by 13.7% in the first half of the year, to €3.949 billion, while imports grew by 16.4%, to €24.157 billion.

In the first half of the year, Spanish exports to China represented 2% of total foreign sales, while imports accounted for 10.9% of all Spanish foreign purchases.

For June alone, Spanish exports to China remained unchanged at €612 million, while imports soared 27.4% to €4.286 billion.

SPAIN INCREASES ITS TRADE DEFICIT BY 58.7% IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR

According to data from the June Foreign Trade Report, Spain's trade deficit stood at €25.113 billion in the first half of the year, an increase of 58.7% compared to the €15.822 billion deficit recorded in the same period in 2024.

This result was a result of a 1% increase in Spanish merchandise exports in the first six months of the year, reaching €197.151 billion, the second-highest figure for a first half of the year, and a 5.4% increase in imports, reaching €222.263 billion.

The coverage rate (ratio of exports to imports as a percentage) stood at 88.7% through June, 3.8 percentage points lower than the same period in 2024.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the countries with which the Spanish economy recorded the largest surpluses were France (€9.993 billion), Portugal (€8.392 billion) and the United Kingdom (€7.617 billion).

Considering June alone, Spain reported a trade deficit of €3.588 billion, five times more than the same month last year (€713 million), after registering exports worth €33.767 billion, a 2.4% increase, and imports worth €37.355 billion, a 10.9% increase.

According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Business, both June's export and import figures are the third highest in the series for this month.
