El Salvador's Legislative Assembly gave the green light this Friday to a reform of the organized crime law that will extend the detention without trial of suspected gang members for two more years during the state of emergency in the Central American country.

"These amendments provide the legal framework to continue and strengthen the war against gangs in El Salvador," Assembly President Ernesto Castro emphasized on social media, regarding the reform, which passed with 57 votes in favor.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) recently called on El Salvador's President David Bukele to end the state of emergency, which has been in place for more than three years, and expressed its "concern over the prolonged extension and improper application" of the measure.

More than 88,000 people have been detained since the state of emergency was in effect since March 2022. Civil society organizations have reported to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) the existence of some 7,000 documented cases of human rights violations in the context of police operations against crime, including illegal and arbitrary detentions, torture, and even the deaths of more than 400 people deprived of liberty in state custody.
