A tourist bus returning to New York after a visit to Niagara Falls went off the road on the highway in an accident that, according to initial reports from the State Police, left "multiple" fatalities.
A total of 52 people were on board the bus, including the driver. "For unknown reasons, the vehicle lost control, veered into the median strip, and when it reversed, ended up in a ditch" near the town of Pembroke, police spokesman James O'Callaghan told reporters.
The spokesperson confirmed that several people were trapped inside the vehicle, while others were ejected, so he was unable to provide an exact death toll at this time. He did confirm that children were among the victims.
Regarding the identity of the passengers, O'Callaghan noted that the majority of those on board are of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino nationality, so translators have also been deployed to the area and have begun assisting emergency services, according to CNN.
