He's back: Daniel Day-Lewis returned to star in the first trailer for his father-son indie drama Anemone .

The intense, moody visuals (below) tell the story of a middle-aged man who leaves his suburban home on a forest trip in northern England, where he reconnects with his reclusive brother (Dia-Lewis).

The Focus Resources project is set to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival —which begins September 26 and runs through October 13, marking the return of the three-time Oscar winner after an eight-year "retirement."

The film is the debut of Lewis's son, Ronan Day-Lewis, and was co-written by both men.

The official description for Anemone Call the film “A gripping family drama… about lives unraveled by seemingly irreconcilable legacies of political and personal violence… linked by a mysterious and complicated past, the men share a complex, if occasionally tender, relationship forever altered by events decades before.”

The description continues: “An emotional powerhouse, this directorial debut is guaranteed in small details and grand gestures as it traces the family’s path to redemption against all odds. In addition to its unflinching lead performances, Anemone boasts supporting work from Samantha Morton and Samuel Bottomley, and sensational widescreen cinematography from Ben Fedesman.”

Anemone was Day-Lewis’s first feature film since 2017 ’s Phantom Thread . Ahead of the film’s release, the actor issued a statement: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his employees and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision, and none of his representatives will be commenting further on this matter.”

He elaborated in an interview with W magazine , "I knew it wasn't typical to make a statement. But I wanted to draw a line. Different this time, but the drive to quit smoking took hold, and that compulsion.
