United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the attacks carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), linked to the jihadist group Islamic State, in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which have left more than 50 civilians dead, including eight women and two children.
"We strongly condemn the attacks carried out by the ADF forces in several locations in the territories of Beni and Lubero, in the province of North Kivu, in the eastern part of the DRC," said its spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, at a press conference, in which he warned that the number of victims of these attacks, which took place between August 9 and 16, could increase from the 52 recorded so far.
The UN representative reiterated his call for "foreign armed groups to unconditionally lay down their weapons and return to their countries of origin," referring to the Ugandan organization created in the 1990s and accused of killing hundreds of civilians in this area of eastern DRC.
The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) has reinforced its military presence following a new wave of violence accompanied by kidnappings, looting, the burning of homes and vehicles, and the destruction of property, pushing civilians into an even more precarious situation.
