The father of Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who died this month after being shot on June 7 during a campaign event, will fill the vacancy left by his son as a presidential candidate within the conservative Democratic Center party.

This was announced this Friday by the party itself, which has authorized Miguel Uribe Londoño, 79 years old and experienced in politics, to now enter the selection process "representing the entire family."

"The Democratic Center Party and its presidential candidates welcome Mr. Miguel Uribe Londoño, who as of today enters the presidential candidate selection process," the party emphasized in a statement, reminding the new candidate of his "obligation" to participate in future activities, including debates.

The Democratic Center aims to define its final candidate in December 2025 or January 2026, in a phase prior to a second consultation that will take place in March. During this phase, the party seeks to select a common candidate from the "democratic unity" with a view to increasing its chances ahead of the presidential elections at the end of May.

Uribe Turbay died on August 11 in a Bogotá clinic after failing to recover from injuries sustained in an attack on June 7. The 39-year-old senator was shot twice in the head, in an incident that shocked Colombian society in the early stages of a long electoral process.
