MADRID, 20 (EUROPA PRESS)

The military junta that has ruled Myanmar since the February 2021 coup announced Wednesday that it has taken control of the town of Demoso, located about 100 kilometers from the capital in the east of the country, as the war progresses.

Security forces have indicated that after 16 days of fighting with rebel forces, the town "has returned to government hands," according to reports reported by the newspaper 'The Global New Light of Myanmar.'

"Some members of the security forces have died and others have been injured," the Army warned, releasing a series of images showing several soldiers posing in front of a sign that reads "Welcome to Demoso."

Thus, he indicated that the rebels have recorded at least six casualties among their ranks. The announcement of the capture of the town comes just days after the junta set December 28 as the date for elections, a vote that has been criticized by the opposition.

The country has been mired in a severe crisis since the military coup d'état to annul the results of the November 2020 general elections. The subsequent repression led to a civil war that has had a massive impact on the situation in the country, now exacerbated by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the country in March.
