Broad Front denounces homophobic insults during Senate session

by August 14, 2025

The Broad Front (FA) senators issued a statement on Thursday strongly condemning the insults directed by National Party senator Sebastián Da Silva toward his Broad Front counterpart, Nicolás Viera, during the questioning of Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries, Alfredo Fratti.

In the text, the FA emphasized that "Uruguay needs to strengthen and establish a climate of dialogue that strengthens and deepens democracy, in the face of the major national problems affecting our country."

The caucus expressed its rejection of "any political action aimed at weakening the quality of political dialogue in Uruguay, regardless of its source" and expressed "its full support and solidarity with Senator Nicolás Viera, who was heckled and insulted by Senator Sebastián Da Silva."

The statement called it unacceptable that "in 2025, a senator of the Republic would intimidate and insult people in court with homophobic insults," and noted that these practices are violent and discriminatory.

Furthermore, the FA reported that it is considering taking "all parliamentary actions provided for in the Senate regulations and the Constitution of the Republic to denounce what happened, in defense of democracy in all its imaginable scope."

With this position, the political force not only supports Viera, but also seeks to set a precedent against any type of verbal violence and discrimination within Parliament.
