MADRID, 17 (EUROPA PRESS)

British actor Terence Stamp, one of the most illustrious faces of the British cinematic revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, has died at the age of 87, his family has confirmed.

"He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and a writer, that will continue to move and inspire people for years to come. We ask for privacy at this sad time," according to a family statement to the New York Times.

Although the London-born actor left his deepest mark on the collective imagination as the villain in the blockbusters 'Superman' and 'Superman II', by Richard Donner and Richard Lester, Stamp left behind a career instrumental in understanding the transformation of British and international cinema in the mid-1960s, with titles such as 'The Collector' (William Wyler, 1965) and Toby Dammit.

Over the following decades, Stamp multiplied supporting appearances in all kinds of productions, always leaning towards uncompromising cinema, such as the Spanish film 'Beltenebros', directed by Pilar Miró, without neglecting great leading roles such as 'The English Falcon', under the direction of Steven Soderbergh, or her portrayal of a transgender woman in one of the most acclaimed comedies of the 90s: 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'.
