Bolivian President Luis Arce swore in five new senior officials to the Armed Forces this Thursday, reminding them of their "mission to preserve democracy and maintain peace and the governability of the State," just three days before the Latin American country holds its presidential elections.
"The distinguished generals who are being sworn in today have a mission, in addition to the constitutional mandate of preserving democracy and respecting the Political Constitution of the State, to maintain peace and the governability of the State and, fundamentally, to guarantee the stability of all legally and democratically constituted governments," he declared during an event reported by the state news agency ABI.
In this regard, Arce emphasized that "ignoring these supreme constitutional values" would be a grave disservice to the Bolivian people and reiterated his commitment to carrying out a democratic and orderly transfer of power.
"We will never agree, and we haven't, nor will we agree, to raise the arms of the Army of the Armed Forces in general against our population. We must respect the democratic process; we have differences, and those differences must be resolved at the ballot box, democratically," he argued.
Thus, the heads of the Armed Forces, the General Staff, the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy have taken office, according to the Bolivian television network UNITEL, which reported that the five new officials will serve on an interim basis until the Senate approves their appointments.
