MADRID, 20 (EUROPA PRESS)
Former footballer Andoni Zubizarreta stepped down as sporting director of Porto on Wednesday, after both parties decided "jointly and amicably" to end their contract, more than a year after taking office, according to a statement.
"Porto informs its members, fans, and supporters that the club and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta have jointly and amicably decided to end their contractual relationship," the club reported on its website.
Zubizarreta was appointed sporting director in April 2024 by club president André Villas-Boas, and with him, the Portuguese club has been able to "lay the foundations for a solid sporting project that can be developed and consolidated in the future."
Andoni Zubizarreta was also "a central figure in the process of acquiring and selling certain players," such as the arrivals of Samu Aghehowa and Gabri Veiga, and the transfer of Nico González to Manchester City, thus helping to promote the club's "financial sustainability."
"Once both parties' priorities for the coming seasons were defined, it was deemed that this would be the most appropriate time to end their relationship. Porto praises Andoni Zubizarreta's professionalism and dedication and wishes him much personal and professional success in the future," the statement concluded.
