The Israeli Armed Forces reported the death Saturday afternoon of Lieutenant Ori Gerlic, a 20-year-old platoon commander, killed by an Israeli ordnance explosion in the southern Gaza Strip.

Gerlic, a native of Meitar, "fell in battle in the southern Gaza Strip," the Israel Defense Forces said in an official statement. The soldier was a platoon commander in the Shimshon Battalion of the Kfir Brigade.

Various media outlets have reported that Gerlic was killed near Khan Yunis due to the detonation of Israeli military equipment during an attack on the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) militia.

A total of 895 Israeli soldiers have died since the start of the military offensive on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. The offensive began in retaliation for the attack by Gazan Palestinian militias launched on the same date, which claimed the lives of some 1,200 people on Israeli soil .
