Atlacomulco accident: death toll and emergency response

In the early hours of Monday, September 8, a tragic collision between a train and a bus occurred on the Atlacomulco–Maravatío route in the Industrial Zone, leaving at least eight people dead and around 45 injured. The Herradura de Plata bus, a double-decker bus, was struck while traveling over a railroad crossing; the passengers on the upper deck were the most affected. The State of Mexico Civil Protection and emergency teams confirmed the preliminary death toll and deployed SUEM (Suem of the Municipality of Mexico), the Red Cross, the State Police, the National Guard, and the Attorney General's Office for rescue and forensic work.

Images circulating from the scene show the severity of the impact and the complexity of the scene, with rescue efforts underway for those trapped in the wreckage. Local authorities reported that reinforcements arrived from Jocotitlán and San Felipe del Progreso to assist with medical care and debris removal. The municipality of Atlacomulco issued a statement of condolences and announced support for the families of the victims and assistance for the injured.

City Hall urged respect for the area where the accident occurred and asked the public not to approach so as not to hinder emergency response efforts. They also recommended keeping roads clear so that emergency teams can work quickly and announced that alternate routes are being evaluated due to the complete closure of the section in both directions. The road closure requires drivers to take detours while the emergency response is in progress.

Adrián Hernández, coordinator of Civil Protection for the State of Mexico, reported that authorities managed to arrest the bus driver; he will be handed over to the Municipal Police to determine his legal status. Investigators from the Prosecutor's Office and railway experts were working to gather evidence to reconstruct the sequence of the accident and establish responsibility. Meanwhile, hospitals in the region are treating the injured, and protocols have been activated for the transfer of more seriously injured patients.

The shock in the community is evident: residents and local authorities expressed solidarity with those affected and stressed the need to ensure psychological and financial support for the families. Work on the site will continue until the rescues are completed, the area is secured, and experts can complete their investigations into the cause of the crash. Those seeking official information are advised to follow the City Council and Civil Protection statements.
