A judge on Saturday denied bail to Indian immigrant Harjinder Singh, accused of causing the deaths of three people in a traffic accident in Florida, whose case led to the suspension of work visas for foreign truck drivers.
The White House issued an executive order in late April stipulating English proficiency as a "non-negotiable safety requirement" for professional drivers, arguing that it "is common sense" and lamenting that "this requirement has not been enforced for years, and American roads have become less safe."
Singh answered only two of 12 questions correctly when the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration evaluated his English proficiency after the Aug. 12 crash, which he caused by making an illegal turn, according to the indictment.
State Governor Ron DeSantis lamented this week that Singh “should never have been behind the wheel,” in part because “he doesn’t even speak English.”
The court ruled that Singh will not be released before trial due to a substantial flight risk and his inability to post bail, Fox News reports.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio finally halted the issuance of work permits for foreign commercial truck drivers last Thursday, claiming they pose a "danger" to the lives of Americans. "Effective immediately, we are suspending the issuance of work visas for commercial truck drivers," he announced on his X social media account.
