German prosecutors on Wednesday charged an 18-year-old man with being a "follower" of the Islamic State terrorist group and planning an attack on the Israeli Embassy in Berlin, the country's capital.

The accused, who was arrested in February at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport as he was preparing to leave the country, has been in pretrial detention ever since. According to authorities, he wanted to travel to Pakistan to join the Islamic State and receive military training there.

"Since early February 2025, he initially planned to carry out an attack in Germany, for example against the Israeli Embassy in Berlin," the Prosecutor's Office warned, adding that, to this end, the young man allegedly obtained instructions on how to make explosives.

However, the plan in question would have failed since the necessary material to make the artifacts could not be obtained.

Prosecutors accuse him of supporting and belonging to a foreign terrorist organization, giving instructions to commit a serious act of violence endangering the state, and preparing a "serious act of violence endangering the state."

To finance his trip to Pakistan, according to the prosecution, the defendant signed two mobile phone contracts to purchase high-end smartphones, which he later sold for a profit. "Shortly before beginning the trip, he sent a video to an alleged ISIS member abroad pledging allegiance to the organization," prosecutors state.
